Our Mission

We are #CleanupHull! We strive to make people more aware of the harmful impact of the litter environment ranging from cigarette butts to thermal plastics which are non recycle. The purpose of the site is to provide valuable information for the general public and to give them the opportunity to go out and to pick some litter in local communities. It is also to educate people especially younger people to change their attitudes in regards of litter & reduce the amount of litter dropped on the floor.

Littering is the act of carelessly throwing away or leaving rubbish out in the open instead of discarding them into bins. Littering is an unacceptable act as even throwing a small piece of litter can build up into piles of trash. They can cause accidents, diseases, and pollution in local places. This will severely impact the natural beauty and wildlife around us.

"The trash and litter of nature disappears into the ground with the passing of each year, but mans litter has more permanence." - John Stienback

Our Demographics

According to a national study, people who litter deliberately are around the ages of 18 to 34 years old However a study  revealed that older adults are most likely to discard litter properly in a bin.

Everyone litters at least some point in their life, according to research by Zero Waste Scotland we have a desire to get red of litter quickly. We have ‘the ick factor’ according to researches. For example,  you could be holding an ice lolly stick, instead of finding a bin to dispose of your rubbish you convince yourself that the ice lolly stick is biodegradable, therefore you’ll dispose it in the bushes.

This pie chart gives you an idea on what types of litter are commonly found in public. You can see that 47% of the chart shows domestic products being the biggest factor. Items such as machinery or clothing have been incorrectly disposed.

A pie chart demographic of each category of item disposed.
This timeline graph shows the increase of litter over the years.

Chart B shows the percentage of the rise of litter dropped over the decade from 20004 – 2014. It shows the rise of fast food related litter. The trend is the general population are throwing more litter on the floors and the local councils are picking less litter up. It is a bad attitude from the general population because litter harms the wildlife i.e. birds, hedgehogs and other wild creatures.

Fast food littering is a major problem in the UK and the US as the fast food industry is a primary source of littering. Plastic or straws from fast food restaurants are littering the oceans and rivers.

Burger King, McDonald’s, Seven Eleven, Starbucks and Wendy’s are the majority of this litter. Reusable resources could eliminate up to 33% of it.

Our Solution

You can see the images above prove that East Hull is having a major issue with how the impact of litter is spoiling the nature that surrounds us. Almost every corner has litter surrounding everywhere.

We have come up with alternatives to prevent the litter problem from becoming even bigger! We provide Hull with our clean up programmes. To pick up litter at any time we are hosting our clean up programmes in large space areas in communities such as parks. #CleanupHull invites people who want to make a difference in their community, we invite all people to participate to banish litter, get some exercise & out of the house to achieve a safer environment for us and the wildlife. We have locations on our website to notify you where our next clean up project is.

We have 100's of volunteers who are keeping Hull clean!
Bins have been installed around Hull to organise & prevent further littering

With the donations provided we have installed 100’s of bins around the city, near public places & bus stops to reduce the amount of litter. We have also designed the bins to manage litter to be conveniently stored into categories in a large bin. It is colour coded to signify what type of litter gets disposed in a certain area. Not only we want to make Hull tidy but we aim to promote recycling too! The design is made for it to be easier for people to recycle.

We have aimed these bins to be in busier places in public areas such as fast food places, bus stops and footpaths to make it convenient for pedestrians to throw away litter. This separates waste temporarily into categories which is easy to recycle and easy to send to waste disposal sites as its colour coded.

Project clean up!

Community members tackling litter picking in their local communities is an awesome idea and its very much needed however the law enforcement needs to be more tougher on littering in our local areas so good folks don’t need to risk their lives in picking up litter from dangerous waters no more.

The kind act of this kayak club is absolutely fabulous and we thank them for their efforts in trying to keep the waterways open especially for the wildlife.
