Modern Collage Research

Collage has been one of the most relevant forms of art making. It’s resonant because it is made of the stuff that we see every day. It’s familiar. It reflects our reality.- Elliott Hundley

A collage is a technique of art creation created by combining photographs or any other form of media to create a whole unique vision, a new form of art. This can be done by overlapping images together or adding different forms of media such as newspapers, fabrics or other found objects. All kinds of collages can vary in meaning and genre which is why this art style is popular due to the one of a kind aesthetic and pieced together process. Collages can be found around us in everyday items such as in family photos or mood boards.

An example of collages being further explored in modern art would be in surrealism, surrealists used collages to enact what they thought to be poetic activity of the unconscious mind. Surrealists relied on their subconscious to expand the use of collage and create vivid dream-like scenarios.
