2.) Conceptual Design Transition Planning

Conceptual design

Conceptual design is the heart of a design project. Visual communication in graphic design needs a meaning to successfully get a message across. The overall concept with conceptual design doesn’t have to be overwhelming but collaborative so it works more smoothly, the overall design needs to be effective so the core meaning could be created. This bridges a gap between theory and visual representation. For this week’s task I have to use conceptual design to bring a message of sustainability using a storyboard.

For second week’s task I had to create a storyboard for a conceptual animation of sustainability & ethics. I have done this by drawing and designing 2 basic storyboards with each having 8 frames. By designing my concepts I can easily use these for references to create my 15 second animation piece. I have created two concepts however I had to pick one. I have chosen the second concept as it gets the message across quicker and I preferred the minimalistic approach.

The first concept is called ‘The consequences of being unsustainable’ where it shows the downside of what would happen if humans don’t take action with being responsible by continuing to not having sustainability. The concept basically shows 3 aliens travelling in a spaceship where they are spectating planet Earth, they then say the following “Hey Earth, you look good from afar” before adventuring to the Earths atmosphere. The second frame shows the Earths atmosphere with a conceptual part being as the clouds drift away they appear to look like a pair of hands pulling away from each other to show the landscape below. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth frame shows disasters caused by us humans and they begin to question thoughts such as “What’s happened to the trees?” or “What is going on with the marine life”? The final 2 frames show them reconsidering their stay on Earth saying how Earth wasn’t what they thought implying that the climate change, pollution & deforestation has made them uninterested for their stay on Earth.

The second concept shows a depiction with a 2D Earth. The first frame shows hands holding the Earth informing the viewer to take care of the Earth. A sequence later shows a truck which represents pollution is in the frame. As the truck drives further around the 2D Earth it affects the planet negatively with oil spills, garbage piling up, greenhouse gases, factories & more examples of what is impacting the environment. After this then transitions to a bike spinning then shows the Earth again, except this time it shows the continents forming with the truck fading out which then is replaced with a man riding a bike. The man & bike starts moving around the 2D Earth with it replacing all the toxic, greenhouse gasses with renewable resources, nature & mountains to show how good it would be to be sustainable. The final stages to the storyboard shows the same bike as earlier zooming out in the frame again, except it shows the bicycle fully showing the man peddle off which results in the 20 second animation ending.
