For this semester I have been given the choice to pick & create my own project with the guide of my lecturer. I have decided that my major project this year is to be a VR artist, this is where I am able to paint in 3D and being out my own creations to life as a final piece. I think VR is a great tool to use for designing as you can simulate complicated designs in minutes without the restrains of reality. VR users can create designs that are accessible to them no matter the scale or prototype.
Image 2 – Shows a comparison of 360 & virtual reality and how it works. The icon symbolises the eye vision the viewer has. A 360 video works by putting the whole scene surrounding them inside a sphere so it acts as a small universe whereas virtual reality you are free to roam about in another dimension, the only bound being the scale of your room. Image 3 – Is an illustrated example of how VR can transport you into a new world, it can give an illusion that you are in a different reality..
For the many years I have been studying art & design I have always been restricted with all my creations being in 2D whether that being Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop. I think VR would change my point of view and give me a new outlook in graphic design by switching the standard computer screen visuals to a 3D experience where your room is your space to replicate and design anything that you want. I think the use of VR would be a good change for this project as I am able to freehand my artwork which would feel more natural to me compared to designing my outcome onto a computer screen as it is easier to use the tools on VR as you have a palette & sliders that adjust to your liking.
VR is also a handy device to use, within mere seconds you can get transported from your own room into a simulation. You can access a range of handy resources on VR such as entertainment, sport, art & even education. This is a good benefit as it saves on fuel used in unneeded transport that cause pollution & raise the cost of living. This would be good advantage for my major project as I am going to be creating art pieces on VR that would be able to be accessible to everyone as all my ideas and artwork are all going to be in one place. It is also good as it is easier to make changes in the simulation than having to design my ideas again from scratch in reality.
Another thing I would like to consider for my project is that I will need to use the Meta Quest headset consistently to create all my artwork on so to be successful I would have to spend time practicing and getting to grips with VR and learn how to use it, the techniques, the UI etc. I will also need to experiment with ideas in a highly interactive and engaging manner.
