Christiana Couceiro is a Portuguese illustrator living in Lisbon, her style in artwork consists of collages, mainly with the use of shapes, primary colours, black and white images and text. She creates this by using newspapers, photograph cut-outs, tiles and paper.

Furthermore she prefers to use of clean, straight shapes when designing, each piece of artwork is organised and minimalistic. I really like how she combines vintage and modern collage to create something different. I also love how she experiments with shape and adds a whole dynamic to the photographs she pairs with it giving the original photo a whole new meaning.

Christina Couciero inspired artwork

I have adapted Christina’s illustrations into my own digital artwork. I have tried working with a similar layout like hers by using vintage cut-outs and removing the background. I then have added basic shapes by using the ellipse and rectangle tool on Adobe XD. I wanted to go with a surrealism/Dream like scenario. I wanted to work with space and abstract imagery to make no logical sense to the image which makes the whole design more surreal. I have done this by adding a 19th century Victorian illustration of a woman on a horse standing on a cloud above in space. I added some typography in the background to give more depth to the scenario. I like how I have combined a vintage image with modern shapes. I also added a text box of the definition of a cloud with vintage typography. Using photoshop I have made the rest of the imagery grayscale with the intention of the only form of colour being the abstract shapes which is present in most of Christina’s work.
