RP5- Websites that break the rules

For this week’s task I have been assigned to research some web layout designs that appeal to me and to figure out the meaning behind it. To better understand the designs, I have begun analysing why have the creators have taken the approaches they have chosen and the motivation behind it. I have selected my 3 personal favourites of examples of brutalist website designs.

What is brutalism?

Brutalism was a distinct use of style of architecture originating in the 1950’s- 70’s. And it can be identified by blockish, minimalistic concreate sculptures.

Website 1- ‘Take a walk on the wild side’

One web design that had appealed to me is the ‘Take a walk on the wild side’ web layout. This website is different from what I am used to seeing as it goes against the traditional principles of a web layout.

Firstly, when you are transported to this page you are greeted with multiple heavily saturated images layered together to give the effect that the web page had been corrupt or glitched out. You are then made to view the menu bar which consists of a black& white menu bar with the exception of the menu having the appearance of being collapsed with being placed irregularly. This is an example of what a regular website shouldn’t be with images leading to no where without title, disproportionally placed menus making the website barely look usable. I believe the creators have done this to make the user think that they have no control of the website, like the name of the website URL suggests “Take a walk on the wild side”.

The movements appear to be buggy and clunky, depending on where your mouse is the page the images will move to progress further down the page. The web design has had used the parallax effect as some layered imageries have been setup to move faster than the background images. This is a good demonstration on how to make a web page look three-dimensional.

Website 2- ‘Toiletpaper.org’

The website Toiletmagazine.org is another website I have liked the appearance of because of the vibrant visuals and imagery. This unusual web page has endless number of links, pop up pictures and lots of images overlapping each other.

Website 3- ‘Gregroque.com’

Probably the most weirdest website on my list is ‘Gregroque’; its the strangest one out of the three as unlike the other two websites that can let you scroll down the web page to reveal more content this website takes a different approach by having a headshot of a person staring directly at you giving you a feel of confusion and uneasiness with the actor not breaking eye contact the entire time you are on this page. I picked this website as I question as to why the creators have made this rather bizarre choice.
